Our faculty stay connected to the people and organizations that are advancing architecture and facility management. They keep current with best practices and trends. Their networks become your networks.
Ferris is a teaching university, which means your professors are the people you engage with in the classroom and the studio. They know your name, where you’re from, and what interests you.
Dr. Tanzia Sharmin joined the Architecture and Facility Management program in Fall of 2018 as the lead Facility Management faculty member. Prior to joining Ferris, Tanzia was the Lead Researcher at NTG Clarity Networks Inc. in Toronto, Canada. As the Lead Researcher in BIM and energy usage her role was to model, evaluate, and optimize elements of building design, construction, and operation of buildings for the purpose of eliminating non-value adding tasks, reducing operational energy, cost, and environmental footprint. This experience will prove valuable in increasing student exposure to technological applications that are re-shaping the Facility Management field.
Dr. Sharmin earned her Doctor of Philosophy in Civil and Environmental Engineering from the University of Alberta, Canada and her Master of Architecture and Bachelor of Architecture from the Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology in Bangladesh.
She has over 8 years of professional experience in Energy Efficient Building Design and Construction, and a solid background in Computer Modelling and Optimization Techniques in Building Design, Construction, and Operation. She has over 6 years of teaching experience in the Department of Architecture at Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology as a Senior Lecturer and Assistant Professor. She has also published numerous journal articles and technical reports on Performance Driven Design in Architecture, Energy Efficient Smart Building Solutions, Green Building Performance Modelling Simulation & Optimization, and more.
Her education and experience in architecture—as well as optimization techniques in building design and construction–will complement her Facility Management experience and allow the FM program at Ferris State University to build upon its historically strong focus on how buildings are created and how they function.
